The Near North Side of Chicago is the northern territory that makes up the Chicago downtown. The boundaries that make up the Near North Side are Lake Michigan to the East, the Chicago River to the West and South and North Avenue to the North. The Near North Side holds claim to the greatest number of skyscrapers in the Chicago area. The sub neighborhoods that reside within the boundaries are River North, Streeterville, Old Town, Cabrini-Green and New City.
The oldest section of Chicago, the Near North Side’s current history can be traced all the way back to the 1780’s. That’s when Chicago’s first documented permanent settler, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, built his home at the mouth of the Chicago River. Gaining strong industrial roots early on, the Near North Side began attracting its super-rich residents back in 1885 when Potter Palmer built his castle on Lake Shore Drive.
Today the Near North Side comprises a collection of the higheset price per sq ft. homes in downtown Chicago. Along side with its pricey real estate, the Near North Side holds a population of over 80,000 residents. Some of the best retail shopping in the world is all an arms reach away. Constantly in a state of development and transition, the Near North Side continues to lead Chicago with the best in architecture and business.
The Near North Side is home to some of Chicago’s best attractions. From Navy Pier which holds a state of the art IMAX theater and the Chicago Children’s Museum. The John Hancock Center is a staple with the top floor Signature Room restaurant where better views of Chicago can’t be found. The Magnificent Mile is a Chicago gem holding the best in retail and sight seeing. Walk by the classic Water Tower Place or catch a show at one of the boutique Theaters.
