Chicago’s skyline of corporate, condo, hotel and luxury apartment buildings would only be half as spectacular without the contributions of Streeterville.
Bounded by Michigan Avenue, “The Magnificent Mile,” on the West side, the Chicago River on The South end and Lake Michigan on the East and Northern perimeter the former shanty town has developed into one of Chicago’s most recognized luxury neighborhoods.
What we currently know as Streeterville was once just more of Lake Michigan. The waves of Lake Michigan would regularly change the topography of Chicago’s coastal border.
This occurred until the late 19th century when an intrepid traveler, George Wellington Streeter, was taken off course by a storm over Lake Michigan running aground on a sandbar just east of Michigan Avenue. Streeter claimed the land as his own and started charging developers in other neighborhoods of Chicago to dump their construction waste along “his” coast.
With more and more construction debris dumped, the permanent coastline of Chicago started to extend further out into Lake Michigan. With no regard to legal disputes with the actual owners of the land East of Michigan Avenue, Streeter started to sell parcels of his newly created coastline. After many legal battles and a few actual battles, Streeter was removed from “his” land. With the opening of the Michigan Avenue bridge In the beginning of the 20th century, commercial and residential development boomed making the Streeterville neighborhood one of the most sought after areas of the city for luxury apartments and high rises.
Streeterville currently comprises a healthy mix of condominiums, high-end apartment buildings and hotels with more residential developments breaking ground every year.
Northwestern University’s downtown campus also calls Streeterville home. The university’s medical and law schools have been a fixture in Streeterville since the 1920s.
Lakeshore Drive which was built on top of George Streeter’s ill gotten gains now runs along the Eastern coast of Streeterville.
The rental apartment inventory in Streeterville ranges in quality, age and price but the neighborhood is so diverse in it’s apartment offerings it can fit many personalities and needs.
