History

From riots to railroad hubs the Fulton River District has a distinct history that helped shape the growth of Chicago. In the late 19th century the area was the stage for a large amount of Chicago’s commerce including lumber and grain. Many additional staple goods would find their way through the the district in mass amounts. Along with goods, the area was a major transportation point with the completion of Chicago’s first railroad terminal at the intersection of Canal and Kinzie in 1848. The Fulton River District also played a part in labor reform with the shockingly violent Haymarket Riots in 1886 when workers striking for a standardized eight-hour day came under attack.

Current

Over a century later, the Fulton River District, is a beautiful mix of residential and commercial spaces. With some of the most appealing high-rise developments in the city, the Fulton River District, could be deemed “River North for Bargain Shoppers.” When compared directly to its neighbor across the river, the Fulton River District, normally has similar quality residential buildings at a more reasonable rate.

Attractions

With unique and small scale restaurants and bars cropping up regularly in the area you are never far from a great meal or a relaxing drink in the Fulton River District. Being just blocks from, “Restaurant Row” on Randolph Street will definitely feed anyone’s foodie side. Need to head out to the suburbs on public transportation or hop in your car and immediately find an expressway? Both modes of transport are easily accessible with the Kennedy bordering the West side of the neighborhood and both Ogilvy and Union Station within walking distance.
