River North was a key location for Chicago’s early roaring development. Post the great Chicago Fire of 1871, like most of the city, River North was rebuilt.

The bend in the Chicago River, was an area of high trade and industrial development. In a short period of time the area was beginning to see development of warehouses, municipal buildings, factories and shipping facilities all meant to serve the Port of Chicago.

The smoke was once so thick in the area from the factories and warehouses working overtime to keep up with the city’s growth that originally River North was called “Smokey Hollow”. The smoke was said to be so thick that it would block the sun!
