The Gold Coast is recognized as one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the country. The neighborhood is primarily comprised of historic mansions, high-rise condominiums and luxury apartment buildings. The area is normally described as South of North Avenue, West of Lasalle, North of Chicago Avenue and bordered along the East by Lake Michigan.

The Gold Coast was original known as the Astor Street District. Astor Street received the name from John Jacob Astor, one of the United States’ wealthiest people in the 19th century. While he never resided in Chicago, he was recognized for his achievements and brought an aire of sophistication to the Gold Coast neighborhood. While many of Chicago’s wealthiest residents were living in the Prairie District, Potter Palmer, a wealthy businessman, purchased land further North. The land was mainly swamp following the Great Chicago Fire but with Potter’s many resources the land was filled in and created what is not Lake Shore Drive. With the opening of Lake Shore Drive in 1875 one of Chicago resident’s favorite pastime became a leisurely drive along the lake and the Gold Coast. This drew a lot of attention to the area and many wealthy individuals followed the path of Potter and the Archdiocese of Chicago and built lavish mansions along Lake Shore Drive. As the area became densely populated more economic use of the land was developed with close proximity city homes and high-rise buildings. Through the years following its creation the Gold Coast has been home to many influential individuals that have shaped the history of Chicago.

The Gold Coast has retained the aire of sophistication dating back to the Astor Street District days. With many high-end condominiums and luxury apartment buildings throughout the neighborhood, the residents of the Gold Coast have multitudes of residential living options to choose from. It’s tree lined streets are inviting for all and you can feel the history passing by the historic mansions that have been painstakingly kept up through the years.

With a truly walkable layout, the Gold Coast has become a true retail fashion experience. The neighborhood boasts world renowned retailers and specialty boutiques at almost every corner. Restaurants and bars have also found a home in the affluent neighborhood. Rush Street in the Gold Coast turns from a relaxed breakfast and lunch spot during the day to a high energy dinner and drinks experience in the evening and late into the night. Being bordered by Lake Shore Drive along Lake Michigan and having multiple public transportation options through the neighborhood gives residents and non-residents alike easy access to the area.
